Luke was born in Peoria and raised in central Illinois, eventually settling with his family in downstate Tolono.

After high school, he joined the Army serving from 2000 to 2004, including a tour in Iraq, before being honorably discharged. In 2005, Luke signed up once again, this time being assigned to the 1-18th based in Schweinfurt, Germany. From this post, Luke entered his second deployment to Iraq in 2006.

Luke is survived by his mother and step-father, Ava and Richard Tomson; a brother, Trenton Starcevich; a sister, Ariana Starcevich-Reyes, all from the Tolono area; his father and step-mother, Bradley and Glenda Starcevich of St. Charles; and his fiance who resides in Germany.

Afterglow

I would like your memory of me to be a happy one,
I'd like to leave an afterglow, of smiles when day is gone.

I'd like to leave an echo, whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times, and laughing times, and brightly sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun,
With happy memories that I leave, when life is done.
